Open Airspace Manifesto

airspace map

Airspace is the new Internet, the medium is the message. We believe that a free and open Airspace can bring about a better world. To keep Airspace free and open, we call on communities, industries and countries to recognize these principles. We believe that they will help to bring about more creativity, more innovation and more open societies.

We are joining an international movement to defend our sky, because we understands airspace as an immaterial common. We want to start the civilian management of airspace as a common good. There’s a lot we don’t know about airspace: who owns it, how it’s managed, who decides how it’s used. While the "Lords of the Airspace" (the military, governments, commercial pilots and airline industries) have enjoyed exclusive rights to airspace for decades, the incipient civil unmanned applications have already produced some of the most socially beneficial innovations.

From many different areas, there is an increasing demand that we begin to understand and manage airspace as public space, we are increasingly taking more and more social processes and dynamics out of the garage into airspace. Do we want technologies that allow us to be participants, or just consumers?

We support transparent and participatory processes for the establishment of these principles:

Neutrality

The invisible infrastructure of airspace should not be restricted to the use of any specific proprietary technology. The new skylines should be open for all, and not a privatization of public airspace.

Openness

Keep airspace as an open interoperable network of flying devices, where everyone is free to access, connect, communicate, watch, listen, learn, create and innovate.

Accessibility

: Promote access to open and affordable devices for all layers of society.

Safety

is the main argument for deny airspace to individuals or devices that put in danger the rest of us. Society should provide protocols to grant the safety of unmanned aircraft’s and pilots.

Privacy

The use of airspace should not mean the end of privacy in private properties. In the air, borders between public and private land are blur. Protect privacy and defend everyone’s ability to control how the data is produced is a prerequisite to enable flights around us.

Freedom

Don't censor Airspace, it’s a massive communication interface. A point in the sky can be perceived for more than 3 km away. Will governments accept any kind of messages in this new medium of communication?

Innovation

Protect innovation and create without permission. Patents block new technologies to be generally adapted, like the 3D printing. Patents should be avoided, specially each ones related with the safety of airspace. Don’t punish innovators for their users' actions.

Make your drone project a reality

Drone Starting Kit

We invited artists, designers, biologists, activists, architects and makers to apply to this call for invent creative uses of our common airspace.
These are the three selected projects:

# South Small Sister (Irmã Menor do Sul)
A brazilian project about teaching how to build drones for document the social conflict surrounding Suape. What happens when you give power to a private security service to quickly boost economic growth.

# Heroes Architects & Engineers.
Using a drone to building with less energy and CO2 emissions. A interaction between drones and parametric design.

# Plaza Drone
A piece / mobile monument, to install in the squares of towns and cities to display the use and control of airspace.

Congratulations and thanks for make a better airspace.
Thanks also to European Cultural Foundation, Campus Madrid , Noumena, flone and Lleidadrone Asociación for make this possible.

Each prize is composed by:
* Flone Quadcopter.
* Manual : How to use airspace.
* Servo Gimbal.
* 1 year of drone assistance, consulting, and coaching for make your project a reality.

The winners was announced the 30 January 2016 at IIX LleidaDrone conferences in Campus Google Madrid.
