Airspace is the new Internet, the medium is the message. We believe that a free and open Airspace can bring about a better world. To keep Airspace free and open, we call on communities, industries and countries to recognize these principles. We believe that they will help to bring about more creativity, more innovation and more open societies.
We are joining an international movement to defend our sky, because we understands airspace as an immaterial common. We want to start the civilian management of airspace as a common good. There’s a lot we don’t know about airspace: who owns it, how it’s managed, who decides how it’s used. While the "Lords of the Airspace" (the military, governments, commercial pilots and airline industries) have enjoyed exclusive rights to airspace for decades, the incipient civil unmanned applications have already produced some of the most socially beneficial innovations.
From many different areas, there is an increasing demand that we begin to understand and manage airspace as public space, we are increasingly taking more and more social processes and dynamics out of the garage into airspace. Do we want technologies that allow us to be participants, or just consumers?
We support transparent and participatory processes for the establishment of these principles:
We invited artists, designers, biologists, activists, architects and makers to apply to this call for invent creative uses of our common airspace.
